5 characteristics of living things Explained

Explore 5 characteristics of living things! This aticle will give you a detailed idea about living criteria.

No doubt, there ‘re a lot of differences between living and non-living. Taking important life activities, there’re 5 major characteristics of living things, which make them separate from non-livings.

5 characteristics of living things

The 5 major characteristics of living organisms are Growth, Reproduction, Metabolism, Cellular Organisation and Conciousness.

Growth:

Increase in number and mass is called growth. Generally growth in livings is due to cell division. In both unicellular and multicellular organisms cell division causes growth. Growth is due to successful metabolism. When anabolism exceeds catabolism, growth takes place.

Intrinsic or internal growth is the defyning feature of living organisms.

As growth is seen in both living and non-living, growth is not the defyning feature of living organism. Growth in living is internal and growth in nonliving is external.

Reproduction:

The process of giving birth to progeny of same kind is called as reproduction. Again reproduction is of two types such as asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Gametic fusion is the major difference between them.

Reproduction is found in living organisms but it is not the exclusive character in all. This is because, some living organisms like worker honey-bee, sterile human couple and also interspecific hybrids like Mule don’t show sexual reproduction.Hence, Reproduction is not the defyning feature of living organisms.

Metabolism:

This is the universal characteristic of living organisms. Metabolism is found in all living organisms without any exception. Hence, Metabolism is the defyning feature of living organism.

Cellular organisation::

Every living organism whether it is unicellula or multicellular, is made of cell. Hence, cellular organisation is the defyning feature of living organisms.

Conciousness:

Every living organism shows response to external stimuli.Among them Human being is the self-concious. Hence, conciousness is the defyning feature of living organisms.
